God is ideal. As children of God we are called to imitate the love from which we were created. This imitation however is not about adopting something outside of ourselves. Being imitation means connecting with the deepest and truest essence of ourselves. Within our hearts is the design of God. It is about letting go of the ideas or days of being that lay on top of our truest reality. Things happen. Good things and not so good things. As children, who do not know the difference between what is happening and who we are, we take these things on as definitions of ourselves. For me this meant many years of thinking I was a mistake instead of someone who has made a mistake. My goal in life therefore was to never make mistakes because I could not bear confirmation that I was a mistake. It was a difficult way to live. When I got into recovery and learned the distinction, I started a new way of being. In my daily meditation date with God I asked to be willing to make mistakes and learn knowing that I was not a mistake one day at a time.
My prayer for us is the courage to imitate who God sees us as instead of what we think the world wants us to be today.
If God is the model, what can you recognize in yourself as already being an imitation of God today? Share in the comments.
