I was reminded when I was listening to a favorite song of mine recently (Learn to Be Still by the Eagles), that we sometimes forget the garden at our feet. Meaning, we take for granted where we are right now. In fact, we can recognize that what we are grounded in sustains us no matter what is happening in our lives and it will color how we see everything. When we experience the usual in a magical fashion we are re-minded. Like yesterday when I was in this church and I noticed the light streaming through the stain glass. I was struck by the simplicity of its beauty. In that moment I became mindful again and it colored the rest of my day. I know it seems like the mind gets a bad rap for being on automatic pilot but that is only a small percentage of our brain power. There is so much more that our minds can have access to if we slow down long enough to connect our mind with our whole being. To attune ourselves to the rhythm of life in the present moment. This requires an awakening of consciousness (those non automatic parts of our brain). Scientists have found that when we do that we actually create new experiences and patterns in the automatic parts of our brain. This means we can change our autopilot. What new groove would you want to carve into your brain? It is possible. God wants so much for us to be present to the gift we are to ourselves, to the world and to each other. God presents us with gifts throughout our day to re-mind us that we are connected to more than we are experiencing in this life. In order to see, we must open our eyes and be willing to see what is front of us in this life in a more mindful way. There are signs, often simple and subtle, everywhere that offer that mindful opportunity. My prayer for us today is that we be open to seeing the usual in a magical and mindful way and pause long enough to take it in. Make it a great one! Peace~Colleen
