When we are open, not rushed or stressed, we are able to be in the present moment. The beauty of the present moment is that we are aware of all that is going on around us and within us. We can appreciate the simple things that we are seeing because we are free of making it mean anything. Things just are. This is such a freeing space to be in our minds. It is as though they can breathe. The moment we start getting into the meaning, judgment, evaluation we are in our heads and no longer in the present. God wants us to delight in the very essence of being because that is what we were created for. God wants us to have as many present moments as we can. God knows that it takes discipline to get us to stay present. If you look closely at scripture and sacred readings from all faiths and practices, you will notice one common theme–encouragement. God is aware of the sometimes struggle to be in the experience of life for which we are meant. If you look closely at the religious practices of most faiths they create a discipline of turning towards God. Yes they look different and have different words, but ultimately, they all have the same goal in mind–to bring us closer to God, to provide relief from our mind that thinks it is god. But even if we do not read sacred scripture or have a set spiritual practice, we can look to nature to be reminded of the simplicity of love of which we are designed. When I have my date time with God, I don’t do it because I want to all the time (there are mornings I would rather sleep some more) or because I am virtuous in any way. My date time with God each day is done because there is a place deep within me that is touched that the very being who gave me breath this morning calls to my heart and wants to be present with me. I often get distracted or sometimes cannot focus and feel like I didn’t connect very well to God during our designated time together. But day after day I show up and say “here I am Lord, do with me what you will.” I have learned that God works with those who show up, so I show up. My prayer for us today is that we be open to experiencing a moment of simple love in one of our breaths (thankfully we will have many to choose from today–just think of how many breaths you took while reading this). Make it a great one! Peace~Colleen
