God invites. The hospitality of God surpasses anything we can possibly imagine. Many different traditions speak of the importance of opening the door to God. Opening our hearts to love. In order to welcome in what God wishes to give to us we are asked to be vulnerable and available. In a world that seems to pride itself on constantly filling every open moment and exchange with something to occupy itself, it is hard to see the value in an open and welcome space. Yet each of us at some point can remember when we were welcomed by another with warmth and kindness. Everything from literal hospitality to the welcoming of a sharing of ideas comes from the desire to accept our true selves. I learned that the parts of myself that I did not make space for because I did not like did not make them go away. To make peace and open my heart I needed to find a welcoming space in my mind and heart where I could accept myself the way God does. It meant letting go of fixed ideas about what is worthy and deserving. It meant being willing to welcome things I was certain others would not approve of. In the end, it is the welcome I get from taking a new breath, the expansive invitation of the sky, or the open door of a church that warms my heart when I am afraid to find out if there is a person out there who would welcome me. It is having a welcome space each morning on my meditation date with God that allows me to open my heart to the abandoned places in myself that are in most need of loving hospitality.
My prayer for us is the courage to welcome all of ourselves into our heart where God can show us how to live fully in love.
If God welcomes our presence at every moment in time and space, what might you be courageous enough to welcome into your heart about you today? Share in the comments.
