One of the beautiful things about being alive in the world we are in today is how many choices we have. One of the overwhelming things about being alive in the world we are in today is how many choices we have. How is it possible that the very thing we think we want and need more of causes us to experience what social scientists call “decision fatigue”? It turns out when we have so much choice it wears out the part of our brain that works to make those decisions. One method to curbing this is to create habits in which the decision has already been made and just needs the action carried out. Before we get to creating habits we need to have a sense of whether or not it is even something we need to incorporate into our life. Knowing what path we are on and where we are intending to go gives us the parameters with which to work. It doesn’t mean knowing the avenues we are traveling are the only ones we can traverse. It does mean we have some sense of which decisions will keep us moving in the direction of the path we are on. There can be several avenues to get there and sometimes we have to take side streets. However, being able to name the avenue we are on allows us to know which alternate streets are most likely to keep in the line of sight of our main avenue. Decisions are not just a mental thing. Our hearts play a larger role than we realize. Being in alignment within ourselves allows us to be who we are called to be no matter where we are traveling. If we stay in sync with our hearts we will find it easier to navigate through the many avenues we come across on our path and will not be overwhelmed when it comes to choosing what we keep us on track.
Be Within Seeing!
I can easily take for granted my ability to see. There is so much I take in about the world through my eyes. It is also easy to be fooled by my eyes. I can incorrectly think I understand something because I can see it. Have you ever found yourself asking someone if you could see something when actually what you meant was you wanted to hold it and take a closer look? Are we using the wrong word when we ask to see something and want to get our hands on it? Do we see more of something when we touch it and can move it around? By touching it and moving it around we see something from more angles. Perhaps we already know that when we are seeing something we are limited by the angle from which we are seeing it. Perhaps we know intuitively that we want to be able to fully see something and it requires more than just our eyes. Is that what we mean when we say, “seeing is believing”? We recognize in the way we use our words that the heart plays a role in seeing. It is the same space that knows what it means to be seen. The whole purpose of seeing is on some level to know it exists. We make the presumption of existence based on what we are seeing. The funny thing is that we do not realize that what we see is shaped by where we are with ourselves. As Anais Nin wrote, “We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Therefore what we are seeing, what we get our hands on can provide sight into ourselves and where we are in the moment.
My prayer for us is the willingness to notice how what we are seeing is a way of getting in touch with ourselves today.
Be Within Residing!
We have a sense of who we are. When asked to describe ourselves we start with the basics such as name, gender, and role in a family. Perhaps we include our occupation and accolades such as degrees or titles earned. We may share our perspectives on life and philosophical or political inclinations. All those elements of ourselves reside in our description of ourselves and tell others something about us. However, those descriptions do not speak of what is residing in our hearts. They share what we may have residing in us because of particular experiences but they do not provide information about how we process those experiences. Energetically we are sharing what is residing in our hearts without realizing it. We all know it when we encounter someone with whom it is clear does not want us to approach with any kind of closeness or who cannot look us in the eye. We also have been around those who have energy residing in them which invites us closer. Recognizing for ourselves what is residing in our hearts is important if we want to be present with the whole of our being. We may have some wounds residing in our hearts causing us to want to be protective. We may experience different parts of ourselves depending on the kind of people we are around and what we feel is residing in them. My daily dates with God have taught me how to be present with what is residing in my heart at the moment and hold that space regardless of what I sense is residing in others. We are called to be the truth of who we are. Deep down we may believe there is too much darkness residing in us and we resist connecting to it, but God calls us to discover the love God has designed us with which is also residing in our hearts. Any time we wish to delve past our perceived darkness and touch its light, God assures us it is residing in there.
My prayer for us is the courage to explore all of what is residing in our hearts and be open to discovering what God always knows as present within us today.
Be Within Ameliorate!
The template of growth is something within all of us. It is part of our design. How we go about that is somewhat in our control. The reality is we are always learning and growing. The distinction is whether or not we are paying attention to it or intending to grow in a particular manner. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we start with what is and work from there. It is not about seeing ourselves as faulty or something to be fixed. It is about acknowledging where we are in this moment of reality and choosing what to do with it. Within the realm of who we are, what we are experiencing, how we see things, and what we think and feel are all areas where we can make things better if we so choose. The decision to ameliorate an area of our lives could be driven by what the outside world tells us need to be better or fixed. How often does that method really work? Have you ever noticed that when we jump on the latest bandwagon of self-improvement touted by the latest guru it doesn’t quite work or stick? I have long had a propensity for wanting to ameliorate multiple areas of my life. It took me a long time to realize that it was being driven by an internal belief that I was broken and in need of fixing. Developing a relationship with God through our daily prayer and meditation dates has shifted my focus. I still listen to and read up on information. I still keep an eye out on how I can ameliorate my interactions with others, take care of myself, and how I am of service to others in the world. Overall my focus is on how I can ameliorate my sense of what it means to be an alive human being in the world today. I can still fall into the old thinking of myself as something which needs to be fixed. This is what makes the daily dates so helpful because it makes it a continual practice. Instead of being driven from a place of brokenness and needing to be fixed, God invites me to look at being ameliorable in all areas of my life because it is me being the best version of myself. Many things we will not know as effective in allowing us to be our best selves until we give them a try. We can take prompts from the latest and the greatest information, but it is more than just doing what the next best thing is. The difference for me is I do not choose which area to ameliorate simply because I or someone with some authority thinks it is a good idea. I pause and sit with what I feel needs to be ameliorated from the lens of my heart. I ask God, does this need to be improved in my life? And if it is an area to ameliorate I also discern in my heart and in my body if now is the time or with what frequency or intensity. Often the best way to ameliorate a situation with ourselves or others is piece by piece. It’s not like we are in a rush, right? Besides, what would we be rushing to get to? Another thing to ameliorate? Maybe what I need to ameliorate is my perspective on me needing to ameliorate anything in my life today.
My prayer for us is the willingness to discern in our hearts what we think we need to ameliorate in our lives today.
Be Within Surfaces!
Life has many textures and colors. It really is quite marvelous and beautiful when we have the chance to stop and pay attention to it. It is also easy to be dismayed by the various surfaces we encounter. The faces of everything from people to events to buildings and billboards tell a story. Some surfaces are built with words, others with gestures and expressions. We learn quickly as children how to interpret different surfaces. It is how we know not to let ourselves get too close to a hot surface or how nice a cold surface feels on a warm day. We read the surfaces of people on their faces and in their gestures and we read the surfaces that have signs and words to tell us where we are and where we are heading. However, the surfaces only tell us the first level of information. To find out if what we think or feel about these surfaces is true we have to go beyond or beneath the surface. It may not mean the surface lies but it does mean because we are only seeing something from one side, we are limited. Some things or people we do not want to explore past the surface and it is all the information we need. There are other times when it can be harmful to only focus on the surface. It is easier on some level because we can just go with our first impression. We readily embrace the idea of going past the surface when it comes to something we determine as positive but when it is defined as something potentially uncomfortable or unfamiliar, we shy away. When it is the inherent biological protection against danger, it would be wise to stick with the surface. When we are choosing to go with the surface alone because we perceive it as too difficult or fearful to look past the one layer, we are doing ourselves and the surface a disservice. The truth is we can never know what truly lies beneath the surface of another person or experience but a little bit of curiosity seemed to have only killed cats. And as much I hate the idea of cats dying, we could all do with more curiosity in our lives. It might open our eyes and enhance our view of the world by looking under the surface of ourselves and our lives to discover more of what is present than we think or feel at the moment.
My prayer for us is the curiosity to look beneath the surfaces of our lives especially those within ourselves as they are often an opportunity to learn more about the nature of the truth of who we are today.
Be Within Minding!
We use the word mind most of the time to refer to the thing we see as sitting in our brain or the concept of intellect. Either way, it has a particular locality. Then you hear someone ask: Do you mind if ______? I find myself wanting to say: Only when I think about it. Although I know a proper answer would be to say, I can do that or I am okay with that or I am willing to do that. Somewhere along the way in the wacky way that language works, asking if someone minds is a way of getting their permission or their agreement. The agreement has to come from the mind and from the heart. How many things do we only allow from our minds’ perspective without getting the buy-in from our hearts? If we are speaking to what we are capable of doing perhaps we just need the minding to be about the mere ability. There are many things we are capable of doing and can permit doing but is the question really about that? Chances are we are able but do we have the will to do it or go along with it involved the heart. In addition to the will which is needed for willingness, there is the matter of attention, intent, and value which are heart inputs. Maybe we need to start asking ourselves if we heart something as well as mind it. We like to think we are more logically minded than we are. Most decisions we make are impacted by our emotions which sit in our bodies and our hearts. These emotions are funneled through the brain so there is involvement of mind but clearly the question needs to be updated to include the mind of our hearts. When someone asks, do you mind if ____________? They are asking for more than our logical response to the question.
My prayer for us is the willingness to be mindful of the role of our heart when it comes to decisions about what we are minding today.
Be Within Infused!
Life strikes me as a process of undoing and unknowing as much as one of learning and embracing new understandings. We are not aware as we grow up how much has already been infused in our sense of who we are and what we believe. We simply take it for granted. We see ourselves as who we are. There may be some recognition of familiarity with those we have spent most of our time versus those who are new to us, but there is not necessarily a recognition of what that means. A belief is a repeated thought. Whether it is something we were told growing up or a circumstance that caused us to create a particular perspective, we are infused with beliefs. The infusion is where we derive our sense of self. But this sense of self is largely based on circumstances. The circumstances of which family and culture we were born into, what kind of early interactions we had with others, and what those in authority told us we were. The infused information that we have taken on as our definition of self comes from outside of us. This does not mean we need to abandon it completely. It means we are given the opportunity as we mature to look at what has been infused and determine in our hearts if it is still true. Maybe the circumstance no longer exists. Maybe the people who taught us had no other options. Maybe it was only meant to take us so far. We know which infused beliefs need to be brought to question into the truth of who we are at heart because they are the ones we keeping batting our heads against. The infused beliefs that somehow are no longer working. Honestly, it is only when my infused ideas (like: I am doing it wrong, or it is not enough, or it is my fault, I am only as smart as school says I am, or the best way to keep the peace is doing what is expected that) began to break down, that I was willing to see what was true within me as well as outside of me. It is a life long process which God has taught me on our dates to handle with gentleness and compassion both for myself and those who played a role in infusing them. When I focus on how many beliefs or simple ideas could potentially start breaking down I get overwhelmed. God assures me that I do not need to search them out. The more I connect with my own heart and discover the truth of who I am some will just fall away. Some I will want to hold on to and will fight letting go of. All infused ideas and beliefs have served a purpose which has brought me to where I am today. All can be held in gratitude whether or not it is meant for them to stay or go.
My prayer for us is the courage to connect with our hearts so we may look with compassion at what ideas and beliefs have been infused with today.
Be Within Fuel!
Unlike the cars, we drive we have many options when it comes to how we fuel our bodies, minds, heart, and souls. It is hard to imagine how one thing would be able to provide the necessary fuel to operate in all the ways we are called upon to show up. Yet, we have all had times when we seem to be fueled on all levels to such a degree that we were not preoccupied with other thoughts, we showed up with an open heart, we felt strong in our bodies, and we were not thinking about when it was time to eat. If we look closer at what might have caused such an experience of being fueled to occur it seems unimaginable that we could actually find it again. It seems to occur as though something is moving through us and it is not entirely of our doing. But what may have we been doing up until that point to make ourselves ready to receive the kind of fuel that would move us into a space of wholeness? It is not about perfection or getting everything right. It is about having awareness as we go through our lives as to what fuels us well and what depletes us in all these areas. We like to think there is one size fits all, but that does not seem to be the reality. We try often to do what others are doing but do we really check in with ourselves to see if it works for us or do we just go with it until it breaks down completely and shows itself to not be for us? Either way, we learn which is what it is all about. God did not put us in our lives to be who we are because we would know right away the best way to fuel our being. It is a process of learning and growing. It is a process of paying attention and listening to the cues we hear and feel.
My prayer for us is the willingness to check in with ourselves about which areas of our lives are the fuel we are providing ourselves is depleting our process of wholeness today.
Be Within Vagueness!
When we are in a space of overwhelm we lack clarity. We are not sure where to go or what to do because there is too much to think about or we feel pressure to be right. If we look at the areas of our lives in which this happens most they usually correlate with the areas of which we are most vague. Vagueness stems from fear. We push back from clarity because it may mean getting it wrong. We decline to take a look at what is really going wrong for fear that what we are fearing is true. If this is an overarching theme in our lives it may be because we live in the vagueness of ourselves. Many of us reach moments in life when we are doing what we are doing and saying what we are saying simply because it is what we have always done. Maybe we thought it is what was expected of us. That is not clarity. That is motor skills. It was not until I was broken down enough and willing to look at the vague areas of my life that I found the clarity I was seeking. Perhaps it is the gift of the brokenness of addiction but when I found myself at the feet of God with my heart open the vagueness began to clear. I accepted God’s invitation to look into the heart I thought was full of darkness and too fragile to be looked at. God goes with me each day on our dates to this day with the light of love as we see another nook of vagueness. With God, I do not need to let the fear stop me from going into the vagueness.
My prayer for us is the courage to look at the vagueness present in our lives and ask God for the light of love to be shone on it today.
Be Within Sharing!
It is a simple concept we are taught from a very young age. It stands in contrast to the individualism which is preached by our culture but sharing is something within us we cannot avoid. We think of sharing in the context of things but rarely do we acknowledge the sharing of our hearts as part of the equation. We mirror each other in conversation to share a connection. We give love and kindness as a way of sharing. We actually share who we are being at all moments of the day including when we are in moments that are angry and frustrated. Receiving is the other end of sharing. Not all of what we share is meant to be received by others. Sometimes sharing is about living our truth and embodying the message of who we are because it is who we are regardless of who or what receives it. It is said we have a sharing economy. We share car rides, we share ideas, we share pictures of our lives. We even overshare. How aware are we of what we are sharing from our hearts versus the idea of who we want others to think we are? What would our sharing look like if it mirrored the truth of who we are at our core versus what we think others want shared with them?
