Sharing my experiences and understandings of the Great I AM.

Be From Forgiveness!

I find it interesting that I learned about the concept of forgiveness at an early age but had no idea what it truly meant until I had to walk through the process of forgiving my father for the incest.  It stemmed primarily from a desire to no longer be angry.  It is a step by step process and happens in stages, but I am much more free than I was several years ago when I made the decision to embark on a journey of forgiveness.  After a time grace joined me on the journey as a gift and it has allowed me to do things and experience a freedom I did not know was possible. I am able to separate the past and present and recognize that what happened in the past with him no longer has any power over me.  Making peace with the two experiences of my father that are my reality have given me the space to recognize there are multiple facets of people and myself that are always at play in the world.  Most importantly, I choose today which I will engage with in him and in myself. The latest layer of forgiveness has to do with my own body.  While I do not injure my body with food anymore which is a tremendous gift that I am beyond grateful for,  there is still a lot of old thinking that needs healing. So far it has shown itself to be a more harrowing process than that which I walked through with my dad. This spiritual path stuff is not for sissies! The most I can do is be willing to go on the journey and allow God to guide me in what steps to take one day at a time. I ask God for patience I do not have and hold in my mind’s eye the freedom and power of forgiveness that I have experienced already in my life.
My prayer for us is the courage to seek out forgiveness in the areas of our lives where we lack peace if only to embark on the gift of the journey today.

Be From Care!

In the third of the 12 steps as designed by Alcoholics Anonymous it says, “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives to the care of God as we understood Him.”  Many spiritual practices speak of the turning over of one’s will to that of a power greater than themselves.  In AA they present the idea in the previous step that you can create your own understanding of this Higher Power.  To me more than anything is in the acknowledgment that it must be a power that I believe cares for me.  Otherwise, why would I be willing to turn my will and my life over to it?  The formulation of this Higher Power is therefore influenced by what I see as care.  It actually took me several years into recovery before I saw the word “care” in the step.  I now realize it allows me to more readily recognize when I have given power over to something that does not care for me.  That could be a person and his or her ideas, an experience, a story in my head, an expectation, a job, a possession, or my own negative thinking.  When those entities are not caring for me, they are clearly not my Higher Power.  I can then take a step back and reevaluate what I am turning my will and my life over to in that moment. Being still, as I learned to do in my daily prayer and meditation date with God, tune’s my ears and my heart to the still small quiet voice of God which cares for me.

My prayer for us is the courage to look at whether or not the Higher Power in any given moment is truly interested in our care and ask our real higher power to step in.

Be From Protection!

When I think about the Christmas story.  It begins rather horrendously: a child born to an unwed mother;  a father who opted to take his betrothed into his house despite him not being the father instead of having her stoned to death; and shortly after his birth in a stable his family had to flee the country or he would be killed.  Yet Jesus still managed to grow up and carry out his mission.  If one were looking for omens, the beginning of his life would not predict a successful outcome.  It is as though there were all these opposing forces to him even having the chance of making it in one piece through his first year of life, let alone go on to carry out his mission of love and forgiveness.  Perhaps the way that Jesus was protected through warnings and angels is a sign that we are protected the same way.  When God’s will is meant to be, it is meant to be, end of story.  It is clearly not smooth sailing or without adversity, but aligning ourselves with God gives us a fighting chance that the mission of our hearts will win out.  God offers the protection of our hearts.  As far as we know Jesus did not spend his life being bitter or cruel to those who sought to bring him harm.  Quite the reverse he preached a message of forgiveness as many times as needed and then some.  Despite his disparaging beginnings God protected his heart which encapsulated his mission so it would be able to carry on.  And because of the adversity experienced, it makes his message that much more powerful.  I find comfort in knowing and having experienced my heart under the protection of God.  I remember it when I am able to see that despite my own disparaging beginnings, I am connected to my wholeness and the love in my heart which is as close as my breath.

My prayer for us is the willingness to trust that no matter what we experience in life, God protects our heart and nothing can undo the love that resides there every moment of every day.

Be From Instruction!

The fascinating thing about our bodies is the instruction included in the design.  How else would a liver cell know how to function with the liver cell in the organ of the liver?  The joints of our arms communicate along the nerve cells with our brain and bend when needed.  They all received the instruction manual, but what about us?   I have mentioned before that it seemed for a long time that everyone else got the book of instructions on how to live life and either they ran out of books when it came to me or I was absent that day.  I did have instruction at school and church.  My parents instructed me on many things.  After a time, however, those instructions only got me so far.  They allowed me to function.  At some point, my soul began to cry out for instructions to come alive and be whole.  The instructions I was searching for came very subtly with each daily date with God.  I learned to show up, be willing to listen with my whole being, be authentic about where I am in the moment, and was given instruction on how to be.  No matter what presented itself in my life I brought it to our date. .  Without realizing it, I was given the instructions for a path of wholeness of heart and peace of mind.
My prayer for us is the willingness to notice what instructions the path we are on is giving us on how to be today.

Be From Between!

I am not sure if it is a growing sensitivity that I have as I get older or if it is a renewal of my sensitive nature that I squashed as a young child in order to protect myself, but the more awake and alive I attempt to show up in the world, the more I am impacted by what I see and experience.  There is a sensitivity to the energy that is in spaces in between people, the breaths in between thoughts, and the silence in my connection with God.  I used to think it was a sign of something wrong.  As though this in between space meant not enough was happening and trouble was looming.  I can see where I have experienced this in my life, especially at a young age.  Now that I am willing to let go of my childhood reality and step into a mature relationship with reality (at least the best I can), I can tolerate the in betweens, the pauses, the silences.  It is a discipline developed from my daily prayer and meditation date with God.  It doesn’t mean I fully accept it but I am less alarmed by it.  I am more likely to believe that it is possible that the in between might bring about good as well as challenges.  It makes life more breathable.  More than anything I know in my heart that the in between is God unseen and unheard but nothing can erase God.  God waits patiently for me to look to the side or up or refocus my eyes.  I am the one who can writhe my hands in frustration or want to get out of it, but I see now that is a protection device.  There is ebb and flow to everything and the moments in between the ebb and the flow are just as precious and necessary as the two sides they bridge.

My prayer for us is the willingness to breathe and be in the space of in between trusting that God is present even in between.

Be From Power!

The energy force of life that guides us from a place of infinite intelligence within us is an experience that we are sometime in touch with.  The power of our being the person we are meant to be emanates from this force of love.  It is the complete and ultimate energy of love that moves all of life forward one step at a time.  In order to tap into this power we must take a closer look.  It is not about getting it so we can used to what we want to achieve in life.  It is about connecting with it so we can remember who we really are and why we are here.  As this year comes to a close many of us are wondering what will next year bring?  How can I operate from a space of power?  What steps do I need to take in order to be connected with the truth of who I am?  Clearly the world around us is always moving forward.  I believe that deep down we all long for an expanded experience and deep inner knowing of what it means to be loved.  In the deep recesses of our hearts and our minds speaks the language of love so powerful.  Our soul sings the song daily even though we have forgotten how to carry a tune.  Yet our hearts still beat and each morning our eyes open.  God, how do you see me?  What role might I be able to play in the powerful position of love today?  I believe I am ready to know the inner workings of my spirit from which I was created.  Help me to let go of the stories and the barriers that stand in the way of my love’s sight.  I want to know this for myself so that I can take the hand from you to my heart and then to my fellow human being walking next to me.  Show me the power of your love and where within me it has been forgotten.

My prayer for us is the courage to begin this day remembering that we are beings of love designed to transform the world one day at a time.

Be From Standing!

When we stand up to say something we get full access to the power of our diaphragm.  Our voice is clearer and carries more force when we speak while standing up.  To take a stand about something means we hold a strong posture in defense of an idea.  God is always a stand for us.  God is always ready and willing to proclaim the love and the innocence we are even when we cannot see it for ourselves.  Even when we are not being it in the moment. As messengers of God we are called to do the same for each other.  We need each other to find within us and remind us the true essence of ourselves.  It is not easy, but it is as simple as asking God, “how do you see this?
My prayer for us is the courage to seek out the innocence of others and stand and speak to them from the space of love that we have all been conceived today.

Be From Usefulness!

It may sound too simple but God calls upon us to be useful in the world.  We are the beacons of light and messengers of love.  We create this experience by who we are being.  What we do, say, hear, taste , touch, speak, smell, share are all opportunities to make God’s presence in the world known.  A Course in Miracles talks about this concept and in the words of St. Teresa of Avila:  Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours.  Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world.  Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people. What greater opportunity to be of use in the world then to be the world’s experience of God?  It is humbling and exciting at the same time.  It does not require us to be a master of anything except the truest form of ourselves. We show up in our lives and allow our stories to be used as demonstrations of the power of love. We are made in the image and likeness of God and the world needs the version of God in you to show compassion through your experience. Through you we can learn the multitude of expressions of love in compassion and forgiveness.
My prayer for us is the courage to allow ourselves to be useful for the great purpose of making love manifest in the world today.

Be From Election!

Today the word election is placed mostly in the political process of choosing leaders for our government in the United States as well as many other countries around the world.  Election actually takes place in our daily lives as we make choices for what we want to lead us at any given moment.  The most powerful thing I can do today is to elect whether I want to be lead by my heart or my mind or the relationship between the two.  I suppose I am an independent politically as well as when it comes to my personal power.  I elect to give power to my mind all the while checking it in with my heart.  It seems that the journey from the head to the heart can be a long one.  I strive to make it a well-worn path.  I elect to make my heart have the final say when it comes to what is leading me in my life today.
My prayer for us is the willingness to elect what we want leading our lives today as God would have us

Be From Remembering!

Drawing ourselves to God in the sacredness of our hearts awakens our minds to remember who we are.  My daily prayer and meditation date with God is not simply about our time spent together.  It is about the restoration of my mind in alignment with the truth of who I am at my core which is always present in my heart.  By invoking the energy of my heart, my mind can relax and remember to rely on this connection with the heart to sustain it.  It is counterintuitive to a mind that believes it is important to be on top of and manage my survival. Remembering that my survival is not in question, there is room to breathe the energy of my heart into it.  On our daily dates, presence with God as I breathe into my heart gives space to the remembering of who I truly am.
My prayer for us is the willingness to remember that as God’s creation our wholeness lies in the breath of our hearts which is always ready to show us the path to our true selves today and every day.
