As we stop to look around at our lives what we see depends upon our state of mind. We think it depends on what we are actually seeing. We think if we had a different view then we would be happier. If we changed something in our exterior environment then we will be satisfied and grateful. However, it is the dissatisfied and ungrateful mindset that we bring with us to that new house, new job, new relationship, etc. This is why when we get whatever we think we need to make us happy and realize it doesn’t, we latch on to the next thing that clearly is the answer. It becomes an endless race. God gives us life and each day we have the opportunity if we choose to see it from God’s unlimited perspective or our limited perspective. It is within our reach to develop a grateful and satisfied mindset, but it takes practice. The survival mechanisms in our brains were set up to be braced for danger or scarcity at any moment, so our default left unchecked will always look for what is wrong or could be wrong. But we are surviving, we are here in this life, it is up to us to choose to live it. I have found in my short lifetime that when I spend my time focusing on the idea that when I get that thing, or am with that guy, or achieve the markings of an important person in our society, I am always dissatisfied because it is not the longings of my heart. Some pieces of it are and that is what we are invited to discern on a daily basis. Does me working towards the job promotion line up with my soul’s purpose, cause me to learn more and give me an opportunity to love and expand my heart? Does being in a relationship and having a family allow me to spread more love, share my gifts, and learn that I am here for a purpose? In my date time with God, I bring these questions to him. This is what I feel my heart desires Lord, does that line up with what you see as part of my purpose? Am I trying to measure up to society’s ideals or the great work of my soul? And the best part about all of this is that the answers come one day at a time. For today, me pursuing a new career path is what is causing me to step into the best version of myself. Tomorrow if may be focusing more purposefully on the job I have right now. My prayer for us today is that we be open to the dance of life unfolding one day at a time and invite God into discerning what will bring us closer to love, open to learning, and make our hearts sing and share. Make it a great one! Peace~Colleen
