In the Catholic Christian church there is an area around the altar known as the sanctuary. It is where the Eucharist (thanksgiving) prayer is said, and the reading of scripture takes place. Many churches have some kind of space known as a sanctuary and for years there has been a practice of claiming sanctuary. Anyone for any reason can enter a church and claim sanctuary for protection and be granted it. God provides a sanctuary around our hearts. When we are brave enough to face and enter the sacred space He created within our own hearts we can experience safety. She invites us into sanctuary with our breath. It is a place of resting in the knowledge of the heart where we connect to our true selves. It is the sacred space formed in us before anything outside of us brought us harm or distress. The sanctuary of our hearts remained unchanged by the experiences of our lives. No matter what happens we can return to this sanctuary space through the simplicity of our breath and be reminded of who we truly are.
My prayer for us is a curiosity to explore the sanctuary within our hearts and be granted with God’s vision of us today.
